Novel and Efficient Biotechnological Approach to Produce 2,5-Diformylfuran from Biomass-Derived 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural

The preparation of compounds interest from biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) has attracted considerable attention. One such compound is 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF), obtained through oxidation the hydroxyl group HMF. Herein, we describe for first time whole-cell HMF to DFF by Fusarium culmorum EAN 51. Although chemocatalytic transformation into been widely studied, biocatalytic processes have scarcely reported and are limited enzymatic synthesis using combination several enzymes. preferable thanks inherent presence different enzymes, significantly reducing cost process. F. showed a high capability reduce 2,5-di(hydroxymethyl)furan (DHMF) oxidize substrate with yields depending on nitrogen source concentration peptone glucose in media, which highly affected redox this strain. After careful optimization both nutrients response surface methodology, 50 mM were transformed yield (92%) selectivity (94%). These results open new line investigation sustainable production renewable biobased resources.
